NORTH CAROLINA A&T AGGIES STORYLINES
  • The Aggies will honor their history during their Gate City rivalry against UNC Greensboro Wednesday night.
  • The Aggies will welcome the 1981-82 A&T men's basketball team in recognition of their 1982 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship.
  • The team holds significance because it was the first of the Aggies seven straight MEAC tournament titles.
  • Legendary A&T coach Don Corbett was the head coach then. At the time, Corbett was in his third season with A&T after arriving from Lincoln.
  • Sophomore Joe Binion and junior James Doc Anderson led the Aggies that season. Binion, A&T's all-time leading scorer, averaged 19.1 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists. Anderson contributed 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
  • A&T went 19-9 overall and 10-2 in the MEAC. They defeated Howard 79-67 in the MEAC championship game in Winston-Salem, N.C.
  • The Aggies earned a No. 12 seed in the West Region, where their season ended with a loss to West Virginia in Logan, Utah.
  • A&T will also honor the late great Hugh Evans, a 1972 graduate of North Carolina A&T and a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer as a legendary referee.
  • When Evans became an official, he was the second NBA referee from a historically Black college or University.
  • He enjoyed a career that spanned 28 years. Evans officiated 1,969 regular-season games,170 playoff games, 35 NBA Finals contests and four NBA All-Star Games.
  • At the height of his career, he was ranked by coaches, general managers and senior vice presidents as one of the NBA's top officials.
  • He joins Al Attles as the only two Aggies in the Naismith Hall of Fame after his enshrinement in September.
  • Evans, a 2002 inductee into the North Carolina A&T Sports Hall of Fame, played men's basketball for the Aggies from 1959-63 under legendary head coach Cal Irvin. He scored 585 points in 72 games.
  • The Aggies went 63-22 (.741) during Evans' time in AggieLand. Evans passed away in July.
 SCOUTING THE UNCG SPARTANS
  • UNCG lost its last time out to Stephen F. Austin in Montreal, Canada, 75-58.
  • The Spartans trailed 41-32 at the half before a 10-0 SFA run to start the second half extended the Lumberjacks lead to 51-35. SFA grew its lead to 63-39 to put the Spartans away for good.
  • Keondre Kennedy led the Spartans with 17 points. Freshman Donovan Atwell and senior Keyshaun Langley also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Kennedy, a 6-foot-6 forward out of Atlanta, Ga., leads the Spartans in scoring and rebounding at 15.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
  • Langley, the younger brother of A&T great and former point guard Kam Langley, is second in scoring at 11.6 points per game. Langley is also the 3-point threat for the Spartans, shooting 43.6 percent (17-for-39) from three thus far.
  • Langley's twin brother Kobe also plays on the team, averaging 4.0 points per game.
  • Mikeal Brown-Jones, a 6-8 junior out of North Philadelphia, comes off the bench to average 10.6 points per game while shooting 57.7 percent from the floor.
  • Mike Jones is in his second season with the Spartans after spending the previous 10 seasons with the Radford Highlanders.
  • Jones led the Spartans to a 17-14 record in his first season, including a come-from-behind win over A&T. UNCG finished 9-9 in the SoCon, where they finished in a fifth-place tie. They are picked to finish fourth in the SoCon this season.
  • Jones went 174-150 at Radford, winning two Big South regular-season championships and one Big South tournament title, which occurred in 2018. He is 194-168 in 12 seasons as a head coach.
 The Series
  • The Aggies and the Spartans are playing for the 23rd time tonight. Each team has won 11 games in the series.
  • UNCG has won the last five meetings, illustrating what the series has become. A&T won the first five games in the series, followed by UNCG winning the next four. A&T won the next two, followed by UNCG winning the next two before the Aggies won the next four, leading up to UNCG's current streak.
  • The Aggies are 4-2 against UNCG at Corbett.

QUOTABLE: "The guys are really, really excited about playing UNCG. It has become a great rivalry that the guys enjoy playing. They have done a tremendous job of rebounding the basketball against us in recent years. They outrebounded us 51-34 last year, so if we want to win, we'll have to rebound the basketball."
