IOWA CITY, Iowa – Senior Demetric Horton continued to light things up from 3-point range. But the final 4 ½ minutes of the first half didn't exactly go the North Carolina A&T men's basketball team's way in a 112-71 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Aggies dropped to 1-1 on the season. Iowa is 2-0 after beating two HBCUs (Bethune-Cookman and A&T) to start the season.
Four days after going 5-for-7 from 3-point range at home against Edward Waters, Horton hit 4 of 6 3-pointers against the Hawkeyes to finish with 16 points, all coming in the second half. Horton went 6-for-10 from the floor and is now shooting 70 percent (14-for-20) from the floor on the season. Sophomore Kam Woods led the Aggies in scoring for the second straight game with 18 points.
Junior Marcus Watson added 16 points and five rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting, and senior Austin Johnson finished with nine points and 14 rebounds.
Iowa jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the first 4 ½ minutes of the game before the Aggies settled in. A&T played the Hawkeyes almost even over the next four minutes and trailed 24-14 at the under-12-minute media timeout. After the timeout, the Aggies went on an 8-2 run, culminated by a Woods 3-pointer to cut Iowa's lead to 26-22 with 8:09 remaining in the first half.
The Aggies got the lead down to three, 28-25, on another Woods 3-pointer at the 6:38 mark. The Hawkeyes went on a 7-2 spurt to extend the lead to 35-27, but senior Jeremy Robinson netted another A&T three to cut the deficit to five. But over the final 4 ½ minutes of the first half, the Hawkeyes outscored A&T 17-5 to take a 52-32 halftime lead.
Over the first 3 ½ minutes of the second half, Iowa went on a 16-2 run to take a 68-34 advantage. Iowa would lead by as many as 46 in the second half.
Kris Murray led the Hawkeyes with 22 points and eight rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor and 3-for-5 shooting from three. Iowa outscored the Aggies 22-2 in points off turnovers as the Aggies finished the game with 22 turnovers. Iowa also had a 58-30 advantage in points in the paint.
