AMES, IOWA – North Carolina A&T did not fare well in the Hawkeye State in men's basketball over the weekend.
Two days after losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Aggies had a tough time against the Iowa State Cyclones in an 80-43 loss at the James H. Hilton Coliseum on Sunday. The Aggies are 1-2 on the season.
A&T sophomore guard Kam Woods ended the game as the only Aggie in double figures with 17 points on 3-for-6 shooting from 3-point range. The Cyclones slowed down the hot-shooting senior guard Demetric Horton for the moment.
Horton started the season 12-for-20 from the floor and 9-for-13 from 3-point range. But on Sunday, Horton scored two points and went 0-for-6 from the floor and 0-for-5 from three against the Cyclones. However, he did have four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Duncan Powell led the Aggies with eight rebounds.
ISU jumped out to an 11-2 lead, but 3-point shooting kept the Aggies close early. Woods' first three cut the Cyclones lead to 11-5 5 ½ minutes into the game. Sophomore guard Love Bettis connected on a three, and later a jump shot to make it an 18-10 game halfway through the first half.
After ISU's Hason Ward scored in the paint, graduate forward Webster Filmore also scored close to the basket to keep the Aggies within eight at 20-12. But the Cyclones rolled from there.
An 8-0 run gave ISU a 28-13 lead with 3:54 remaining in the first half. Senior wingman Jeremy Robinson ended the run with a 3-pointer, but ISU scored seven consecutive points to move ahead 35-13 with 1:15 to play in the first half. A Caleb Grill free throw sent the Cyclones into halftime with a 39-16 lead.
The Cyclones increased their lead in the second half to improve to 2-0 in the young season. Ajaz Kunc led a group of four Cyclones in double figures with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
