GREENSBORO, N.C. – Play at the Grandover Collegiate hosted by UNC Greensboro men's golf at the par-72, 6,800-yard West Course was suspended in the second round on Saturday because of darkness. Teams will begin play at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday to complete the second round before play in the third round begins.
North Carolina A&T stands at 22-over through 15 holes in the second round after completing the first round at 15-over 233. UNCG leads its tournament at 23-under after shooting a 13-under 275 in the first round. Davidson follows UNCG at 10-under. Elon (9-under), Bowling Green (6-under) and High Point University (2-over) round out the top 5.
Carson Witherspoon led the Aggies in the first round by shooting a 1-under 71. Witherspoon was 5-over in the second round before tournament officials suspended play. Diego Gonzalez and Christopher Pieper both shot 5-over in the first round.
Gonzalez was having an excellent second round as he stood at 2-under through 15 holes. Pieper is 4-over through 13 holes in the second round. Conrado Chozas shot 6-over in the first round, and Martin Gutierrez ended Round 1 at 8-over. But Gutierrez is having an excellent second round at 1-over through 15 holes, and Chozas is 2-over through 15.
Witherspoon started on the eighth hole and recorded three straight pars before bogeying three of the next four holes. But Witherspoon caught fire as he made the turn back to the front nine. He birdied four of the first six holes, including the par-3, 190-yard third hole.
Gonzalez placed three birdies on his card in the second round. He started on the ninth hole with a par before birdieing the next hole, the par-4, 410-yard 10th. He also birdied the par-4, 330-yard 13th to move 2-under on the round. After bogeying the par-5 16th. He birdied the 355-yard par-4 fourth before the round was stopped.
Pieper had a mixed bag in his second round. It included two double bogeys, but it also included three birdies. Before play ended on Saturday, he birdied the 360-yard par-4 first.
Davidson's Alex Heffner leads the tournament at 9-under, followed by UNCG's Noah Connor (8-under) and Symon Balbin (6-under).
