ST. HELENA ISLAND, SC – North Carolina A&T sophomore men's golfer Javier Morgado heads into the final day of the Fripp Island Intercollegiate on Monday as the leader on the leaderboard after shooting a second-round, second-day 2-under 69 on the par-71, 6,609-yard Fripp Island Resort golf course on Sunday.
Morgado heads into the final round with a 3-under 139, one stroke ahead of Presbyterian's Jeep Patrick and Central Michigan's Keith Hunter. Both men stand at 2-under 140 heading into the final round. Freshman Emilio Hernandez went from fourth place to a five-way tie for 20th after shooting a 5-over 77. Hernandez heads into the final round at 4-over 146.
The Aggies are in seventh place with a two-round 21-over 589. They are 16 shots off the lead behind Charleston Southern and Lafayette. Both teams are at 5-over 573. Gardner-Webb is in third place, three shots off the lead at 8-over 576.
Morgado opened the front nine with a par before scoring a birdie on the 382-yard, par-4 second. After two straight pars, Morgado bogeyed the No. 5 before ending the front nine with two pars and two birdies. He birdied the 409-yard par-4 seventh and the par-5, 510-yard ninth. Morgado carded pars on the first five holes of the back nine before going birdie on the 166-yard, par-3 15th.
He gave a shot back on 16 before ending the back nine with two straight pars. Sophomore Pedro Periera had the second-lowest score for the Aggies on Sunday. He had two bogeys and seven pars on the front nine before shooting even par on the back nine. Periera's back nine included two birdies, including a three on the par-4, 400-yard 14th. He also birdied the 520-yard par-5 18th.
Meanwhile, Hernandez had an up-and-down front nine before struggling on the back. On the front nine, he birdied No. 2 before birdieing No. 7 and No. 9. On the back nine, he carded three pars, four bogeys, and a double bogey before finishing with a birdie on 18.
Graduate Drew Walker and junior Camilo Marin also participated for the Aggies on Sunday. Marin carded two birdies and shot a 79, and Walker shot an 85 after carding two birdies. Sophomore Mauricio Alvardo, graduate Tyler Partee and sophomore Ignacio Zapata played as individuals. Alvarado shot 74, Zapata shot 76 and Partee shot a 78.
