A&T Wins Another Road Game, Beats UNC Asheville

The Aggies have won three of their last four true road games.

ASHEVILLE, NC – The North Carolina A&T has been clutch on the road lately.

The Aggies won their third road game in four tries with a 73-71 win over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs Wednesday night at Kimmel Arena in Big South Conference men's basketball.

A&T improved to 9-10 overall and 4-1 in the Big South. UNCA dropped to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

"These guys faced adversity tonight, and they were able to bounce back," said A&T coach Will Jones. "They played a solid 40 minutes on the road against one of the better teams in the league. This is a heckuva win for our program."

At East Tennessee State on Dec. 14, the Aggies trailed by 12 in the first half before a late graduate guard Tyler Maye (Farmville, N.C.) jumper, helped the Aggies pull out a 69-67 win. In their next road game at Radford on Jan. 8, the Aggies led by 12 in the first half but trailed late before junior guard Demetric Horton (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a 3-pointer and a jump shot to propel A&T to victory.

Even in their loss at High Point University on Saturday night, the Aggies overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to cut HPU's lead to two before the Panthers pulled away in the final seconds.

On Wednesday, the relentless road Aggies got into a 14-point hole against the Bulldogs in the first half. A short jumper by UNCA's Trent Stephney gave the Bulldogs a 34-20 at the 4:50 mark of the first half. A&T came alive afterward.

Horton ignited a 12-0 run by converting on a 3-point play. The run culminated with a Horton one-hand dunk set up by a Marcus Watson steal and assist to cut UNCA's lead to 34-32 with 28 seconds remaining in the first half. However, Jamon Battle got to the rim at the buzzer to send the Bulldogs into the locker room ahead 36-32.

After trailing most of the game, the Aggies finally took the lead with 10:11 to play on a David Beatty 3-pointer as the Aggies took a 54-52 advantage. It marked their first lead since it was 6-5 at the 15:21 mark of the first half.

The Aggies grew their lead to as many as six and led 70-65 with less than a minute to play. However, UNCA showed a little resilience down the stretch as Tajion Jones hit a 3-pointer to cut A&T's lead to two. Horton responded by hitting two free throws to put the Aggies ahead 72-68 with 16 seconds to play.

But UNCA, who leads the conference in 3-pointers made, netted another three as Stephney hit one from deep to cut the Aggies lead to 72-71 with 10 seconds to play. UNCA chose to foul graduate forward Justin Whatley (Chesapeake, Va.). Whatley hit one of two free throws, but Jones' final 3-point attempt fell well short of the mark to preserve the win for A&T.

Horton led the Aggies with 17 points and 10 rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and connected on all three of his free throw attempts. Beatty added 15 points and five assists. Watson finished with 14 points and six rebounds, and center Collin Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.) contributed with 10 rebounds, with eight coming on the offensive end.

The Aggies outrebounded the Bulldogs 41-30.

"We talked about what it would take to win this ballgame, and the No. 1 thing was rebounding," said Jones. "Collin and Demetric along with the rest of the guys, laid it on the line and did what we needed to do to win this game in Asheville."

Drew Pember led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Jones added 19.
