A&T Takes Down Another SoCon Opponent

Andrea Laboy-Rivera moves into third place on the Aggies all-time digs list.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – North Carolina A&T opened the Virginia Tech Hokie Invite with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) win over Wofford for its third win against a Southern Conference volleyball team this season.

The Aggies (6-4) snapped a six-match losing streak to the Terriers (5-5).

"I thought we put together a solid match this morning," head coach Hal Clifton said. "I felt like we served better overall and were able to limit Wofford's middles and forced them to play on the pins. Our transition game was good today, and we need to keep being aggressive from the end line."

The Aggies are 3-1 against the SoCon this season with a 3-1 win over conference favorite Samford and a 3-1 win over Mercer. The Aggies win over Wofford is their first over the Terries since 1999. The only SoCon loss for A&T came against UNC Greensboro.

Andrea Laboy-Rivera (5-foot-5, SR, libero, Coamo, Puerto Rico) recorded a match-high 15 digs and added three assists. Fatimah Shabazz (6-0, SR, right side, Cincinnati, Ohio) added 10 kills with a .471 hitting percentage, and Addy Warfield (5-9, JR, setter, Winter Springs, Fla.) recorded 17 assists and five digs.

The 15 digs by Laboy-Rivera gives her 1,183 to move into third on the Aggies all-time list.

But it was Mallory Porcher (6-0, JR, middle blocker, Orlando, Fla.) who forced the Terries to call a timeout when she scored on a kill to cut their lead to 22-20. After the timeout, the Aggies tied the set at 22 after a Porcher kill and a Wofford attack error forcing another Terrier timeout.

That timeout did not have an impact either. The Aggies closed the set on a 6-0 spurt as a Brewer kill, a Naiya Sawtelle (6-0, FR, outside hitter, Stuart, Fla.) service ace, and an attack error from Wofford's Emory Wyatt gave the Aggies a 1-0 match lead.

The Aggies continued the momentum in the second frame by taking an 8-4 lead. However, the Terriers scored the next five points to take a 9-8 lead. The Terriers scored the next five points to take a 9-8 lead. The lead stayed within two points by either team until the Aggies scored two straight points with a kill from Sawtelle and Porcher to take an 18-15 advantage.

After Wofford scored the next two points, kills from Sawtelle and Hannah Howell (6-0, FR, outside hitter, St. Louis Park, Minn.), and a Wofford attack error put the Aggies ahead 21-17. An Addison Foote kill cut the lead to 21-18, but the Aggies scored the final four points on a kill apiece from Sawtelle and Howell and a block apiece from Howell and Shaylynn Hall (6-1, SR, middle blocker, Raleigh, N.C.). The block party gave the Aggies a 2-0 match lead.

In the final stanza, the Aggies captured an early 15-6 lead. However, Wofford chipped away at the lead by putting together a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 24-21. After Clifton called timeout, Edie Brewer (6-0, GR, setter, West Chester, Ohio) ended the match with a kill off of an assist from Warfield.

Sawtelle led the Aggies with a match-high 14 kills. Brewer just missed a triple-double as she ended the night with 18 assists, eight kills and eight digs. Brewer also added three blocks with a .333 hitting percentage. Howell recorded six kills, 11 digs, two blocks, including one solo, and a service ace. Porcher recorded four kills and five blocks, including two solo blocks, and Hall had a .300 hitting percentage.

Meghan Yaffa led Wofford with seven kills. Emily Hodsdon had 27 assists for the Terriers, and Kennedy Smith finished with 14 digs.
