EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T Aggies suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the North Carolina Central Eagles on Saturday, 5-2 and 11-2, at War Memorial Stadium in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball.
The Aggies dropped to 16-29 overall and 11-12 in league play.
Both teams held no-hitters respectively going into the seventh inning in the first game even though NCCU Central plated four runs in the second frame, courtesy of two critical A&T errors, four walks and a hit-by-pitch.
The Aggies had a collective effort in their no-hit bid, with multiple pitchers contributing before NCCU's Kokko Figueiredo lined a single to right field to break it up.
A couple of wild pitches later, the Eagles got a big insurance run to make it 5-0.
A&T finally got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh when senior outfielder Camden Williamson led off with a single, ending NCCU pitcher Ryan Miller's no-hitter. Junior Zach McLean followed with a single through the left side after Miller's exit.
Sophomore Xavier Bussey made a pinch-hit appearance and sent a double down the left field line to score Williamson from second to end NCCU's shutout. Senior Ryne Stanley grounded out to bring in another run and bring the tying run to the plate in junior Justin Rodriguez. But he grounded out to end the threat.
Freshman Derek Martinez (L, 1-5) lost after 4.2 innings pitched, surrendering four runs, all unearned, with no hits and five walks while striking out seven. Miller (8-0) picked up the win, pitching a one-hitter over six innings while giving up one run and striking out eight.
It didn't get any better for the Aggies in Game2, unfortunately.
NCCU struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Eagles outfielder Nick Fajardo smacked a leadoff double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Figueiredo brought him home on an RBI sacrifice fly.
A&T responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Stanley. Stanley went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Eagles scored two more in the next frame while A&T followed with their second and final run of the game in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Tony Mack walked and stole second base and was brought all the way around by an RBI single into the outfield from sophomore Cameran Brantley.
The Eagles scored seven runs between the fourth and six innings to balloon their lead. Figueiredo paced the Eagles in Game 2 with his 2-for-2 performance that included two RBI, two runs scored and two walks.
The Aggies will attempt to salvage a series tie on Sunday, with the series finale starting at 1 p.m., at War Memorial Stadium.
