GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T Aggies dropped a midweek matchup with UNC Greensboro, 8-2, at First National Bank Field on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball play.
The loss puts A&T at 12-26 on the year.
The Aggies threatened in the top of the third when sophomore infielder Tony Mack recorded their first hit on a two-out bloop single to right center. Sophomore outfielder Cameran Brantley followed and laced an opposite-field double down the left-field line, but a good relay throw from the UNCG fielders got the ball there in time to tag Mack out at home.
Junior right-hand pitcher Timothy Davila got his first start of the year and pitched a clean 2.0 innings, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts. Sophomore LHP Daniel Carter (L, 0-1) relieved Davila in the third.
The Spartans started with two-straight singles to begin the third inning. An attempted double play resulting in the UNCG's Pres Cavenaugh beating out the throw at first put runners at the corners with one out. UNCG first baseman Sam Koruschak came to the plate after Cavenaugh advanced to second, trying to draw the throw away from home to score Greg Hardison from third.
Koruschak smacked a two-RBI single into center field to give the Spartans the lead, 2-0. UNCG scored two more runs in the fourth to get Carter out of the game with a line of 2.1 innings pitched, and five runs scored on four hits with one strikeout. The Spartans scored their first four runs, all with two outs.
UNCG added three more in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run bomb from Hogan Windish.
The Aggies plated their two runs in the seventh inning. Junior infielder Zach McLean and senior outfielder Shane Faulk each singled, and Mack followed with a two-bag liner to right-center to bring them both home to score.
A&T had seven hits in the game, led by junior infielder and reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) player of the week Justin Williams, who went 2-for-4. Brantley and Mack both had extra-base hits, and Mack led the team with his two RBI.
Next up, the Aggies will hit the road for their first cross-division MEAC matchup against the Coppin State Eagles. The teams are slated for a four-game weekend series, beginning on Friday, April 23 at 3 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
