Box Score 2 WACO, Texas – The North Carolina A&T Aggies dropped both games of a Friday doubleheader against the Baylor Bears at Baylor Ballpark in non-conference baseball action. The Bears won Game 1, 5-0, before winning Game 2, 7-1.
The Aggies are 7-20 on the season.
The Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game courtesy of an RBI single from catcher Andy Thomas that scored outfielder Jared McKenzie.
Baylor scored the remainder of their runs in the third inning, part of a three-hit, four-run frame.
Freshman southpaw Derek Martinez (0-3) got the start for A&T but struggled to find the zone at times, walking four batters. Two of those walks came in the third with two runners on base. After Baylor outfielder Kyle Nevin drew a bases-loaded walk, first baseman Chase Wehsener cleared them all with a three-run RBI double down the left field line.
Wehsener went 2-for-3 with the double and three RBI to pace the Bears.
A&T got stellar relief pitching from their bullpen in senior right-hander Leon Davidson and sophomore LHP Peyton Winebarger, who combined for 2.2 innings of work and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts, one each.
The Aggies struggled to put together anything offensively. On three separate occasions, the lead-off man reached safely, and then the next batter grounded into a double play. A&T grounded into four double plays in the game and had no extra base hits.
Seniors Ryne Stanley and Shane Faulk went 2-for-3 in the eight and nine holes of the lineup, combining for four of A&T's seven hits.
Baylor got their second-straight complete game, this time from RHP Blake Helton, who went 7.0 innings with three strikeouts.
A&T was able to strike early with their first run of the series in Game 2. Sophomore Tony Mack smacked a one-out, first-pitch single to right-center field and advanced to third after two wild pitches. Freshman Xavier Bussey ran out an infield single to shortstop that scored Mack and gave the Aggies an early 1-0 lead.
Baylor responded with two runs in the first, second and third innings, highlighted by a two-run four-bagger from outfielder Davion Downey in the third.
Freshman Xavier Meachem (0-5) pitched 2.1 innings and allowed six runs on five hits with three walks. Winebarger relieved him and blanked the Bears over 3.2 innings of work with two strikeouts and just 47 pitches.
Both teams went scoreless and hitless for the next four innings until the Bears tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth to tally their seven-run total.
The series's final game is slated for tomorrow, April 2, at 1 p.m. ET inside Baylor Ballpark.
