TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – North Carolina A&T dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Moore-Kittles Field in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) baseball action as the Rattlers won 6-4 and 4-3.
The Aggies drop to 7-16 overall and 2-5 in the MEAC, while the Rattlers improved to 8-16 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC.
"Tip your cap to FAMU," said head coach Ben Hall. "Coach Shouppe had his guys ready to play, and they were the better team. They came through with the big hits when they needed them."
Game 2 entered the seventh inning knotted at 2. Singles from senior Dustin Baber and sophomore Cameran Brantley put runners on first and third with no outs. Freshman Trevor Sheehan hit a fly out to right-center field deep enough to score Baber, and the Aggies took the lead, 3-2. The Rattlers threw Brantley out on the play.
A couple more hits and a walk loaded the bases, but senior Shane Faulk flew out to end the frame.
In the home half, the lead-off batter walked before senior closer Evan Gates, who had given up one earned run all season entering the day, came into the game. He struck out three-straight batters, but the third reached base safely on a passed ball, putting runners at first and second with two away.
Another passed ball advanced both runners into scoring position.
LJ Bryant followed and ran out an infield single to the second baseman in a close call at first, bringing in the tying run. A walk loaded the bases, and Seyjuan Lawrence came up big for the Rattlers with a walk-off RBI single up the middle to seal the game.
The Aggies trailed 2-1 heading into the sixth inning in the first game. Senior catcher Ryne Stanley led off the inning and took a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall to tie the game at 2. Baber grounded out to follow before Brantley walked. Sheehan reached on a throwing error, and then both runners advance to second and third, respectively.
Junior Justin Rodriguez laced a single up the middle to score both Brantley and Sheehan, and A&T jumped on top, 4-2. A groundout followed by a popup ended the frame.
Gates entered to pitch for the Aggies in the bottom of the sixth. The Rattlers were able to plate four runs in the frame aided by a two-run RBI triple, two walks and a hit-by-pitch.
Bryant paced the Rattlers with a team-high three hits in the game. Jared Weber and Tucker Rayburn each had two RBI to lead the team.
Game 4 will be played tomorrow, March 28, at noon as the Aggies will look to avoid the series sweep.
