Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Brewer, Warfield Set The Table, Aggies Win Big

Edie Brewer and Addy Warfield combined for 34 assists.

EAST GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T hitters have a luxury most who participate in Division I collegiate volleyball do not.

The Aggies have two outstanding setters who both have a knack for knowing where to place the ball for their hitters. Senior setter Edie Brewer and sophomore setter Addy Warfield showed off that ability Thursday at Moore Gymnasium. They led Aggies volleyball to its seventh straight win with a three-set sweep (25-7, 9, 10) of the South Carolina State Bulldogs in MEAC play.

Brewer ended the day with 18 assists, while Warfield contributed with 16 assists. Both are solid defensive players as Brewer totaled eight digs and a solo block, and Warfield had six digs. Often when Warfield is setting, Brewer doubles as a pretty good hitter as well. She finished with six kills, no attack errors and posted a .857 hitting percentage. For good measure, she added four service aces.

"Our setters did a nice job of moving the ball around, and our attackers were very aggressive," said N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton. "All in all, it was a very good day for the Aggies."

It truly was. The Aggies (7-0, 7-1 MEAC) hit .438 for the match after hitting .579 in Set 1 and .545 in Set 2. Junior Fatimah Shabazz, who leads the conference in hitting percentage, led the way with 11 kills, only two attack errors and a .562 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Mallory Porcher also had a good hitting night, finishing with a .600 percentage on seven kills and one attack error. Junior Andrea Laboy-Rivera led the Aggies in the back row with 10 digs.

"I'm very proud of how the team competed today," said Clifton. "It was a great group effort. I thought we played big at the net forcing South Carolina State to mix up their swings. Our side out game was very crisp today, and that was good to see."

The Aggies blew out the Bulldogs for the third time this season. The Aggies put together a 13-1 run in the first set to take a commanding 23-6 lead. After a Maya Rembert slammed down a kill for the Bulldogs, a kill apiece from Brewer and junior Amalie Rupertova ended the first set.

Brewer led the Aggies in Set 1 with five kills and no attack errors on six attempts. She also had four assists in Set 1 to go along with Warfield's six.

Set 2 saw the Aggies jump out to a 10-3 lead before that lead increased to double figures, 15-5, on a Rupertova kill. SCSU (0-5, 0-5 MEAC) called timeout, but things did not get much better.

The Aggies pulled out to a 21-7 lead on a Porcher kill. Sophomore Arianna Mackey ended the set with a kill off of a pass from Warfield. Porcher finished the set with four kills and no attack errors on six attempts.

The Bulldogs did get within seven, 17-10, on an Aggies attack error in the third set. N.C. A&T proceeded to score the final eight points of the set to end the set and the match. Junior Macenzie Richards had two kills during the run. Shabazz had six kills, no attack errors on seven attempts in the third set.

SCSU had only six kills on Thursday and posted a negative-.195 hitting percentage.

"I'm really proud of the mental aspect of the game and how our players are continuing to grow their volleyball IQ," said Clifton.

Before the match, the Aggies honored seniors Edie Brewer and Courteney Pitt for reaching respective milestones. Brewer received two commemorative volleyballs for passing 2,000 career assists and 100 career service aces. Pitt received a commemorative volleyball for reaching 1,000 career kills.

The Aggies and the Bulldogs play again at 1 p.m., Friday, March 12, at Moore Gym.
