ORANGEBURG, S.C. – North Carolina A&T set a school record in hitting percentage and blew away the South Carolina State Bulldogs for the second straight day by winning in three sets (25-9, 10, 13) in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball on Friday afternoon at Dukes Gymnasium.
A&T (6-1, 6-0 MEAC) improved their winning streak to six. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC.
In the process, the Aggies obliterated the previous school record for hitting percentage by hitting a crushing .644. The previous record was d .489 set on Oct. 19, 2003, against Coppin State.
N.C. A&T recorded 45 kills with seven errors and 59 total attacks.
"We played another steady match," associate head coach Blaine Tendler said. "Our ladies did a nice job from the end line. As a result, our middle hitter transition game clicked. Our passers did a great job keeping us in system, which helped us to a season-high .644 hitting efficiency."
Junior right side hitter Fatimah Shabazz led the team with 10 kills and a .818 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Amalie Rupertova added nine kills and a .615 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter Addy Warfield recorded a match-high 11 assists, while senior setter Edie Brewer recorded 10 assists, five kills, two service aces and three digs to go along with a .429 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Courteney Pitt added seven kills and a .750 hitting percentage.
Junior right side hitter Macenzie Richards added five kills and a .833 hitting percentage.
South Carolina State didn't score back-to-back points in the first set as the Aggies won the set by 16 points. Richards recorded four kills with a .800 hitting percentage, as the team recorded a .765 hitting percentage.
The Aggies took a 2-0 match lead by jumping out to a 21-5 lead. Rupertova led the Aggies with six kills and recorded a .625 hitting percentage, while Shabazz connected on all five attempts for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.
The Aggies won the final stanza by 12 points. Pitt led the Aggies connecting on all six attempts for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage. Shabazz recorded four kills and a .600 hitting percentage.
The Aggies return home for a four-match homestand starting with North Carolina Central at 4 p.m., Thursday and 6 p.m., Friday at Moore Gymnasium.
