UNCG Home Runs Lead to Win Over A&T

Jocelyn Bennett recorded two RBI.

EAST GREENSBORO – On a rainy and cold day, North Carolina A&T (0-6) fell to crosstown rival UNC Greensboro 10-2 in five innings at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex, Friday afternoon.

Junior catcher Jocelyn Bennett recorded the only two RBI for the Aggies and went 1-for-2 at the plate. Senior designated player Hailee Cutts went 1-for-2. Junior second baseman Stephanie Williams and sophomore Mariah Terry each scored a run.

In the circle, freshman Kiara Richards (0-1) pitched the first 2.2 innings and gave up five earned runs with two strikeouts. Freshman Sharla Kirkpatrick pitched 1.2 innings and gave up one earned run.

The Spartans (2-4) started the game by scoring four runs in their first inning after a two-out, highlighted by a three-run home run over the left-field fence by Jasmine Palmer.

The Aggies (0-6) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning. Williams reached on an error and advanced to second after Cutts singled up the middle. Junior Vivica Boyd moved Williams and Cutts into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

Bennett doubled to right center to drive home Williams and Cutts, bring the tying run to the plate in Desttany Parker. Parker grounded out, moving Bennett to third, but the Aggies could not score her as the inning ended on a groundout.

UNCG scored two runs in the top of the third inning after an RBI single and an RBI walk but left the bases loaded as the Spartans took a 6-2 lead.

The Spartans scored four runs in the fifth inning after a grand slam over the left-field fence for the game's final runs.

After two outs in the bottom half of the inning, junior right fielder Eternal Fuller walked, followed by sophomore right fielder Jai Deese being hit by a pitch. But a strikeout ended the Aggies threat and the game.

Jordan Gontram led The Spartans by going 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.

The Aggies travel across town to face UNC Greensboro Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
