Brewer, Sawtelle lead Aggies to Big Conference Road Win

The Aggies snapped a two-match losing streak.

RADFORD, Va. – Naiya Sawtelle (6-0, FR, outside hitter, Stuart, Fla.) and Edie Brewer (6-0, GR, setter, West Chester, Ohio) led the Aggies to a 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-18) win over Radford at Donald N. Demon Center Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference volleyball action.

The Aggies (10-6, 2-2 Big South) snapped a two-match losing streak with the win. Radford dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-4 in the Big South.

"We were able to pick up a nice road win today," head coach Hal Clifton said. "Radford came out of the blocks ready to go. We were able to recover in the second and then made some quick adjustments. We had a lot of players contribute on the court and from the bench. We had to bring a lot of energy from our side, and we did."

Sawtelle recorded a season-high 18 kills and 17 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Brewer added a match-high 34 assists and 11 digs, four service aces and five digs.

The two teams battled to a 23-23 tie before the Aggies went up one on a Radford service error. Hailey Flowers responded with a kill for the Highlanders, but a kills from Fatimah Shabazz (6-0, R-SR, right side, Cincinnati, Ohio) and Sawtelle gave the Aggies the set and tied the match at 1.

Sawtelle continued her dominance into the third set as she posted nine kills and a .444 hitting percentage. With the Aggies leading 20-16, they closed the set on a 5-0 run that included two Sawtelle kills.

A&T took over the fourth set after a sanction got Radford to within three, 17-14. A&T went on a 4-1 spurt capped by a Mallory Porcher (6-0, JR, middle blocker, Orlando, Fla.) kill to give the Aggies a 21-15 lead. As Brewer ended the match with a kill, Radford never got closer than five the rest of the way.

Shabazz added 10 kills and four blocks. Howell and Shaylynn Hall (6-1, SR, MB, Raleigh, N.C.) recorded seven kills. Hall added three blocks, and Howell added five digs.
