Game Recap: Football |

Aggies Get Historic Win at Truist Stadium

N.C. A&T football wins its first-ever Big South Conference game.

A&T STATISTICAL LEADERS: RB Jah-Maine Martin (14 rushes, 106 yards, 2 TD); QB Jalen Fowler (15-for-20, 206 yards, 2 TD, 7 rushes, 76 yards); DE Jermaine McDaniel (5 tackles, 3 unassisted, 2.0 sacks, 2 TFLs, 2 QBHs); Najee Reams (8 tackles, 5 unassisted); Amir McNeill (2 PBUs); Richie Kittles (6 tackles, 1 unassisted, 2.5 TFLs); Jacob Roberts (5 tackles, 1 unassisted, 1.5 TFLs, 1 INT).

RMU STATISTICAL LEADERS: QB George Martin (17-for-31, 203 yards, 1 TD); RB Jonathan Wynn (3 rushes, 44 yards, 1 TD); LB Jamar Shegog (9 tackles)

WHY A&T GOT THE "W": The Aggies capitalized on red zone opportunities, going 5-for-5 (4 TDs, 1 FGs) inside RMU's 20-yard line. The Aggies put forth a balanced attack with 222 passing yards and 224 rushing yards for a season-high 446 total yards of offense. They got pretty much whatever they wanted on that side of the ball, not punting a single time all day.

WHY RMU DIDN'T GET THE "W": The Colonials could not get anything going in the run game, averaging just 2.0 yards per carry and amounting to 54 yards for the game. Special teams mishaps put RMU in lousy field position throughout the day as well. RMU had the ball trailing by six, 20-14, with a chance to take the lead, but a three-and-out put those hopes to bed quickly. Punter George Souders shanked the punt that went just 20 yards, giving A&T the ball near midfield, which they took advantage of with a four-play, 51-yard score culminating in a Martin touchdown run.

CRUCIAL: RMU put forth a 14-play, 96-yard drive that took up almost six minutes, cutting A&T's lead to six, 13-7, with 23 seconds remaining in the first half. However, another special teams mishap for the Colonials allowed Taymon Cooke a 35-yard return on the ensuing kickoff, giving the Aggies an opportunity starting at the RMU 45. Fowler threw a 23-yard strike to Jamison Warren with eight seconds remaining and one shot at the end zone before a field goal attempt. Instead, Fowler tossed a jump ball toward Zach Leslie, who did his best basketball impression, boxing out his defender and snagging the ball out of the air with no time left on the clock, giving the Aggies a 20-7 lead and all the momentum heading into the break.

THE STORY: EAST GREENSBORO – The Aggies started the Big South Conference, the way they ended play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) – dominant at home. North Carolina A&T bested their first-ever Big South opponent, Robert Morris, 41-14, Saturday at Truist Stadium to improve to 42-6 on their home grass over the last decade.

The Aggies had a day on the offensive side of the ball, scoring a season-high 41 points on a season-high 446 yards of offense. All-American running back Jah-Maine Martin played like just that, an all-American, recording his first 100-yard rushing game of the season to go along with two touchdowns. A&T head coach Sam Washington said on Monday that he knew Martin's time would come, and, unfortunately for the Colonials, it came on Saturday.

Joining Martin in the offensive coming-out party was quarterback Jalen Fowler, who not only had an excellent passing day, but he was also the team's second-leading rusher.

Reigning Big South special teamer of the week, Andrew "Money" Brown continued his consistency in the kicking game, knocking through two field goals (35-yard and 20-yard) on Saturday as well as five extra points.

RMU won the coin toss and deferred their reception of the kickoff to the second half, putting the ball in the Aggies hands first. With that, A&T drove 47 yards on 10 plays, and a 35-yard field goal from Brown put them up 3-0 early.

The stout A&T defense forced a turnover on downs on the Colonials' first drive, and the offense took full advantage, this time going 64 yards on eight plays. Freshman running back Bhayshul Tuten scored his second-career touchdown on an 18-yard scamper to finish the drive and put A&T up 10-0.

Another field goal by Brown had A&T up 13-0 before RMU put together a 96-yard touchdown drive right before the half. A&T's quick response was a 35-yard kickoff return by Taymon Cooke that put the ball at the RMU 45. Then, two Fowler completions later, the return of Zach Leslie happened. Playing in his first game after missing the first three, Leslie went up and caught a huge 22-yard TD pass to end any momentum the Colonials had.

RMU did respond with an opening second-half drive that went 75 yards in seven plays, ending with a Jonathan Wynn 40-yard TD run to make it 20-14. But from that point on, the Aggies outscored the Colonials 21-0. Martin scored her first two touchdowns of the season in the process.

QUOTABLE: "Very excited to win the first ballgame within the Big South Conference. It was a tough ballgame for a while there. They (RMU) came in, and they were well-prepared. They were focused, and they came in to win, but I think our guys were able to stay focused and humble and stay after it. I thought they got after it really well."

A&T Head Coach Sam Washington on the big win Saturday

"Yay! That's a coach's dream because now you're able to manage the clock while running the football, and then you're controlling the game with the pass. I tip my hat to this young man (Jalen Fowler). He did an enormous job with that."
