Aggies Literally Walk Off To Beat Elon

Timothy Davila pitches four strong innings of relief.

EAST GREENSBORO – The North Carolina A&T baseball team won a midweek thriller against Elon, 9-8, on Tuesday evening inside War Memorial Stadium. The win puts the Aggies at 6-6 on the year including four-straight victories.

"(Former N.C. A&T head football coach) Broadway always said, 'All wins are good wins,'" said N.C. A&T baseball coach Ben Hall. "I wasn't happy with the way we started the game, but I'm proud of the team for grinding it out and answering the call late."

A&T was led offensively by junior infielder Justin Williams who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Camden Williamson turned in a 2-for-4 performance to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.

With the Aggies trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh, A&T finally got the bats going. Junior transfer Alex Bibb roped a double down the left field line and Williams brought him home with a double of his own to make it 8-6.

Ryne Stanley then singled to center field to score Williams and cut the deficit to one, 8-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Aggies loaded the bases with only one out and due to some disciplined situational hitting, drew two walks to win the game, 9-8.

"I was happy to see our at-bats continue to improve and our offensive competitiveness show up," said Hall.

A&T didn't get the start they wanted from sophomore right-hander Gianni Smith who gave up four runs in the first inning, but the bullpen stepped up in a major way.

Junior righty Timothy Davila threw 4.0 innings in relief and surrendered just one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

"Timothy Davila was the key of the night," said Hall. "He gave us some pace on the mound and some much-needed zeroes. We continue to play clean defense."

Senior RHP Leon Davidson pitched the final 1.2 innings and allowed no runs on no hits with a strikeout to hold the deficit at one, allowing the Aggies to walk it off in the ninth.

Next up, the Aggies will welcome Lehigh to War Memorial Stadium for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday, March 6 at 4 p.m.
