Cutts Homers, Aggies Lose Twice at N.C. State

Hailee Cutts hits her first home run of the season.

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina A&T softball dropped both games Sunday to No. 24 James Madison 13-0 in five innings and to N.C. State 12-2 in six innings on the final day of the N.C. State Invitational.

For the second consecutive day, the Aggies (2-16) hit a home run.  Freshman third baseman Maddie Trotter hit the first home run of the season on Saturday against Lehigh. Sunday, it was junior Hailee Cutts who homered against N.C. State.

The Wolfpack scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead 2-0 after two sacrifice flies. They added a run in the second inning on an RBI single to lead 3-0.

Cutts then hit a home run to left field to drive home junior second baseman Stephanie Williams who reached base on a hit-by-pitch to cut the lead to 3-2.
NCSU scored another run in the third inning after an RBI single to increase the lead to 4-2. The Wolfpack eventually scored three runs in the sixth inning to end the game on a three-run home run.

Three Aggies recorded a hit, sophomore center fielder Eternal Fuller, Cutts and sophomore first baseman Vivica Boyd. Cutts and Williams scored a run, while Cutts recorded two RBI.  Freshman Kayla Brown (1-4) picked up the loss in a complete game.

The Wolfpack were led by Brigette Nordberg going 3-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored. In the circle, Sydney Nester (8-4) picked up the win in relief giving up two runs on two hits.
In the first game against JMU, Williams, Boyd and catcher Jocelyn Bennett each recorded a hit. Junior Bayleigh Kirby (0-5) picked up the loss giving up three earned runs.

JMU scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning with the biggest blow coming on a grand slam. The Dukes scored four runs in the second after a two-run single and two RBI singles. 

The Dukes were led by Kate Gordon going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI. Isabel Kelly (1-0) picked up the win pitching a complete game.

The Aggies are back in action this weekend with a trip to Longwood, Fla., for the Florida Spring Games.  N.C. A&T starts with Detroit Mercy at 4 p.m. and Cleveland State at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Valparaiso at 11 a.m. Saturday.  The Aggies finish with two games Sunday with Charleston Southern at 9 a.m. and Long Island at 11:30 a.m.
