BALTIMORE, Md. – North Carolina A&T continued exercise control over the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Saturday as they eased to an 84-38 win over Coppin State at the Physical Education Center.
The Aggies (12-4, 4-0 MEAC) won its sixth consecutive game for this season and their 28
th straight game over MEAC opponent in the regular season. Coppin State (0-17, 0-4 MEAC) remained winless on the season.
Senior guard
Cinia McCray continued her hot streak. McCray finished with 20 points, six steals, six rebounds and four assists on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor. In the Aggies four conference games, McCray 18.0 points and shooting 52.9 percent from the floor (27-for-51).
"Cinia has been playing great since the start of conference," said N.C. A&T coach
Tarrell Robinson. "This is just another performance that we expect of her in her last year. I'm glad that she remained hot from our previous game and hopefully she will continue that this weekend."
Junior forward
Deja Winters added 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor including 6-for-7 from 3-point range. Winters started the game 5-for-5 from three and added two rebounds, two steals and two assists.
"She makes it tough for teams to play a zone," Robinson said. "They have to find her. She is one of the best shooters, scorers in the league. It's great to see her explosive, even though she is coming off the bench."
Senior center
Alexus Lessears returned to the lineup and added 11 points and six rebounds. Robinson said it was great to see Lessears have a great performance in her return to the court.
"We need her as we start to get closer and closer to the top teams in our league," said Robinson about Lessears.
The Aggies forced 28 Coppin State turnovers and held the Eagles to 28.6 percent shooting. The Aggies have won their four conference games by an average margin of 33.2 while averaging 72.8 points and holding their foes to 39.5 points.
Coppin State did have the lead on Saturday at 10-9 with 3:37 remaining in the first quarter. The Aggies closed the first with nine straight points to take an 18-10 lead. It got worse for Coppin from there. N.C. A&T outscored the Eagles 10-1 to open the second quarter as they took a 28-11 lead with 6:18 remaining in the first half. An 11-0 run by the Aggies increased the lead to 24, 39-15, with 38 seconds remaining in the half.
An Eagle 3-pointer at the 14 seconds mark cut the lead to 21 points, 39-18, at the half. N.C. A&T's lead grew to 36 in the third quarter before leading by more than 40 points in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles were led by Tyree Allen with 13 points.
The Aggies remain in Baltimore to face Morgan State Monday at 5:30 p.m., before returning home for a four-game homestand.
