DOVER, Del. – North Carolina A&T won its fifth consecutive game after with an enormous second-half scoring outburst as the Aggies defeated Delaware State 69-45 Monday night at Memorial Hall in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball action.
The Aggies (11-4, 3-0 MEAC) outscored the Hornets (6-10, 2-1 MEAC) 41-17 in the second half including a third quarter where the Aggies outscored the Hornets 22-2.
"I talked to my young women yesterday at shootaround that we both are 2-0 and we are playing for first place," said N.C. A&T coach
Tarrell Robinson. "The team that recognizes this first will most likely win the game. They had their way in the first half. Our young women woke up and held them to 17 points in the second half."
Senior guard
Cinia McCray scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the third quarter to along with seven rebounds. McCray was 8-for-13 from the floor including 7-for-10 from the 3-point range.
"We needed every basket that she took today," Robinson said of McCray. "Cinia is always a clutch performer, a clutch shooter."
Senior guard
C'coriea Foy added 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals. She is only nine points shy of becoming the 14
th player in school history to score 1,000 points in a career.
Delaware State got off to a hot start scoring the first seven points of the game over the first 2 ½ minutes of the game. The Aggies quickly answered as McCray's 3-pointer cut the Hornets lead to 9-7. A three by Winters got the Aggies to within one at 11-10 and sparked a 9-0 run that gave the Aggies a 16-11 lead before DSU cut the lead to 16-13 to end the first quarter.
After DeMaurea Moore scored to cut the Aggies lead to one, 16-15, the Aggies were able to outscore the Hornets 6-1 to take a 22-17 lead with 6:23 remaining in the first half. But Miajah Bullock tied the game at 22 with a jump shot before Winters gave the Aggies a three-point lead with a three. Shantell Bostick completed a three-point play to give the Aggies a 28-26 lead with 1:36 remaining in the first half. DSU's Tierra Floyd scored in the paint to send the teams into the locker room tied at 28 at halftime.
N.C. A&T held the Hornets to only one field goal and two points in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Aggies shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from the floor in the third, scored 22 points and were led by four McCray 3-pointers. The Aggies went into the fourth quarter with a 50-30 lead and cruised from there leading by as many as 26.
The win is the Aggies 27
th consecutive regular-season win over a MEAC opponent and their 18
th consecutive road win in the conference. The Hornets were led by Janasia Law with 10 points and eight rebounds. DSU shot 23.1 percent from the floor and 8.3 percent from the 3-point range. The Aggies finish their four-game road swing in Baltimore this weekend with Coppin State Saturday at 2 p.m., and Morgan State Monday at 5:30 p.m.
