Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Aggies Bounce Back with an 82-74 win at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – Four North Carolina A&T women's basketball student-athletes recorded 10-plus points as the Aggies (7-4) bounced back with an 82-74 at Clemson (4-8) Friday afternoon.

The Aggies came out on fire shooting over 50 percent in the first and second quarter.  N.C. A&T shot 60 percent in the first quarter and 52.6 percent in the second quarter.

"We shot a lot before at shot-a-around and our ladies were loose," head coach Tarrell Robinson said.  "I'm big on how you respond to adversity and I challenged them in the Akron game.  They didn't show up when they needed to.  This is an opportunity to put it in the past."

The Aggies scored 50 of the first 72 points to take a game-high lead of 28 points, but Clemson kept chipping away at the lead by scoring 22 of the final 30 points of the first half to cut the lead to 14 points, 58-44.

The Tigers kept chipping away at the lead by outscoring N.C. A&T 17-9 in the third quarter to cut the lead to six points, 67-61.  Clemson pulled within a point, 71-70 with 4:50 remaining in the game, but the Aggies outscored the Tigers 11-4 the rest of the game for the eight-point win.

Junior guard Deja Winters led the team with 27 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the floor, including 6-for-14 from the 3-point line and added three rebounds, while senior guard C'coriea Foy and senior center Alexus Lessears both recorded double-doubles.

"Deja can score," Robinson said.  "She is still trying to figure out the other aspects of the game.  If we have a team that's going to sit in the zone and leave her open in the corner, that's her sweet spot, she's going to make those."

Foy added 13 points and 10 rebounds and was close to a triple-double with eight assists, while Lessears recorded a game-high 11 rebounds and added 13 points.

"Foy made some tremendous plays," Robinson said. "She attacked the glass and got some really huge rebounds and when we needed a play, she pretreated the zone and was able to kick it out to people."

Senior guard Cinia McCray added 10 points, shooting 4-for-6, including 2-for-4 from the 3-point line, while sophomore guard Kennedy Boyd added nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from the 3-point line.

Clemson scored the first three points of the game to take a 3-0 lead with 9:24 remaining in the first quarter, but the Aggies scored nine consecutive points to take a six-point lead, 9-3, with 7:18 left.  A Clemson 3-pointer cut the lead to three points, 9-6, with 7:07 left, but the Aggies scored 25 of the final 36 points to take a 17-point lead, 34-17, after the first quarter.

N.C. A&T scored 16 of the first 21 points to increase the lead to 28 points, 50-22, with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter, but Clemson kept chipping away at the lead to get it down to a point; however, the Aggies prevailed in the win.

Clemson was led by Amari Robinson with 27 points and six rebounds and Kendall Spray with 21 points and four points.

The Aggies are back in action after Christmas with a trip to Richmond, Va., to face VCU Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. for the final nonconference game.
