Aggies Fall to PC In The Spartan-Aggie Finale

Box Score

GREENSBORO (September 2, 2017) – North Carolina A&T Freshman Edie Brewer had her second straight double-double with 22 assists and a season-high 14 digs in a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17) to Presbyterian at Moore Gymnasium Saturday night in the final match of the Spartan-Aggie Volleyball Invitational.

N.C. A&T drops to 3-4 overall and Presbyterian improves to 2-4. The Aggies won their opening match of the Spartans-Aggie Invitational sweeping Delaware State on Day 1 but fell on Day 2 to both UNCG and Presbyterian.

“I am very excited about Edie and what she is doing”, N.C. A&T coach Hal Clifton said. “She definitely made some really smart and quick decisions. She will get better as she becomes more comfortable in our offense. Her attacks on the ball helped us out tonight and she will only improve as the season goes on.”

Brewer tied a team-high with her nine kill, making her one kill shy of a triple-double. She also had a pair of blocks. Senior Alyssa Pitt finished with nine kills while her freshman sister Courteney Pitt had eight kills. Junior Megan Wiggins tied a season-high with 13 assists and sophomore Camille Uadiale recorded a season-best five blocks.

PC took an early 8-3 lead in the first set and held on never trailing the Aggies. Brewer had three kills on a .429 attack percentage and added six digs in the set to lead N.C. A&T. The Blue Hose finished with 15 kills compared to 10 by the Aggies. Trailing 18-10, N.C. A&T reeled off four consecutive points to cut the deficit to 18-14. But the Aggies never got any closer than four the rest of the set as PC claimed a 1-0 lead in the match.

N.C. A&T minimized their mistakes in the next set with only four errors. Even with their solid offense, the Aggies could not hold off the PC attack. N.C. A&T had three service aces led by a pair from Brewer that made the set exciting in the final moments. PC led 24-17 before a sudden 6-0 run by the Aggies capped by an Alyssa Pitt killed to cut the lead to one. Sydney De Jong ended the Aggies hopes with a kill to end the set.

“We played really well at times which was so exciting to see,” said Clifton. “I would have liked us to stay a little more consistent, unfortunately tonight we came out really flat in the first couple of sets. We made the ending of the second set exciting and carried the momentum into the third. The fourth set started out positive and then things spiraled a little bit, and we could not recover”

Brown had four kills in the third set leading the Aggies to a two-point victory. Both teams battled in an exciting set that featured 10 ties and six lead changes. The Aggies trailed 24-23 before a PC services error and two more PC attack errors kept the match going by forcing a fourth set. Courteney Pitt contributed three kills and Lindor added two. Uadiale had three blocks to anchor the defense. The Aggies posted five blocks which were key.

In the fourth, PC were the aggressors and posted a .364 attack percentage. Despite the strong offensive showing by PC, Alyssa Pitt still the Aggies to within three, 19-16, on a kill. But PC scored the next three points which propelled them to the set and match victory.

Presbyterian had a trio finish with double-figure kills led by Allie Wright's match-high 14.

N.C. A&T heads to Jacksonville, Ala. for the Jacksonville State Invitational on September 8-9. The Aggies take on host Jacksonville State on Friday at 11:30 a.m., and then will battle Mississippi Valley State at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Aggies face ULM at 9:00 a.m., followed by Alcorn State at 2:00 p.m.
