Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. (September 19, 2017) – The Aggies went down in straight sets to the East Carolina University Pirates in Minges Coliseum Tuesday night.
Senior Alyssa Pitt registered seven kills on .286 hit percentage to lead the Aggies attack. Freshman Courteney Pitt added six kills with a block while senior Jasmine Lindor had five kills and a pair of service aces. Freshman Edie Brewer finished with 17 assists, seven digs and two service aces. Defensively, freshman Milanna Morgan led with eight digs and senior Samara Brown had five digs with three kills. N.C. A&T connected on 26 total kills with a match-high 11 occurring in the opening set.
Courteney Pitt was off to a solid start posting five kills getting the Aggies off to a positive start. One of her kills gave A&T an 8-6 advantage capping five consecutive points. The Pirates kept things close and trailed the Aggies by no more than two-points until the momentum shifted with four kills by ECU and three attack errors by N.C. A&T. As a result, the Pirates went ahead 18-13 and later ended the set on a 6-1 run. Both teams tallied 11 kills apiece but eight attack errors were the difference in a 25-19 win for ECU.
Errors continued in the second set for N.C. A&T. Lindor was the only Aggie with multiple kills as the team struggled with eight errors and a match-low six kills. ECU maintained their attack and had a .389 hit percentage in the set with nine kills and only two errors. The Pirates controlled from the opening serve and won the second set, 25-15.
Alyssa Pitt came up with four kills on seven attacks carrying the A&T offense in the third. The match lead changed three times in the first eight points highlighted by back-to-back kills by Brown and Pitt. Both Aggie attacks made the score 8-6, but the set turned in favor of the Pirates with the ensuing points. ECU rallied off six points to go up 12-9. The Aggies last offensive attack made it 17-13, on a kill by Courteney Pitt and ECU closed out the set, 25-16 to sweep N.C. A&T.
The Pirates were led by Bri Wood's nine kills and Natalie Montini's had seven. Shelby Martin finished with a match-high 29 assists while Brandee Markwith collected 14 digs.
Next, the Aggies prepare for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foes Maryland Eastern Shore, Hampton and Norfolk State in the North-South Challenge in Norfolk, Va., on Sept. 22-23. N.C. A&T plays the Hawks on Friday at 4:30 p.m., the Pirates are slated for Saturday at 11:00 a.m., while the Spartans match is at 4:00 p.m. All three matches count as non-conference contests.
