GREENSBORO (April 21, 2017) – North Carolina A&T lost its third straight on Friday as Davidson starting pitcher Durin O'Linger led the Wildcats to a 6-0 win over the Aggies in non-conference baseball at War Memorial Stadium.
O'Linger pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout and struck out nine in the process. Right-hander Michael Johnson (3-2) took the loss after pitching five innings and striking out three. The Aggies were shutout for just the second time this season.
The Wildcats (19-16) were also aided by two home runs from Cam Johnson. Eric Jones also homered for Davidson. After scoring in the first, Davidson extended their lead in the third inning as Johnson led off with a home run. The Wildcats then loaded the bases later in the inning with no one out. Jones hit into a double play, but it did allow Will Robertson to score for a 3-0 Davidson lead.
A two-run homer in the fourth put Davidson ahead 5-0 over the Aggies. The Wildcats home runs gave O'Linger all the support he needed as he just seemed to be in rhythm Friday night against N.C. A&T. He retired nine straight Aggies between the second and fourth innings. Junior outfielder Greg White saw his 18-game streak of reaching base come to an end. Sophomore Jarrett Norman, junior Myles Sowell and redshirt sophomore A.J. Hunt had a hit apiece in the game for the Aggies.
The Aggies (20-17) did get good work out of the bullpen from junior Josh Stikeleather (RHP). Stikeleather pitched four innings of scoreless relief where he struck out three. The Aggies were scheduled to travel to Davidson to play a game on Saturday against the Wildcats before returning to War Memorial Stadium on Sunday to finish the three-game series.
Instead, the two teams will play the final two games of the series in a doubleheader at Davidson on Saturday because rain is expected on Sunday. The Saturday doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m.
