MURFEESBORO (March 24, 2017) – The North Carolina A&T women's tennis team is embarking on one of its best seasons in years after a 4-3 win over Chowan Friday at the Chowan Tennis Courts gave the Aggies their fourth win of the season. It is the most wins the Aggies (4-10) have had since the 2010 season when they finished the season with four victories.
The freshman combination of Klara Smolikova and Kanishka Chawla have been vital to the improvement. Both ladies won singles matches on Friday along with sophomore Angelica Martinez. Smolikova evened her record at 6-6 on the season in singles play with her win over Anna Makhneva at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Chawla followed Smolikova's win with a win at No. 6 singles over Franca Pacelli, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3. Chawla is now 5-6 on the season after starting the year 0-3.
Martinez finished out the singles matches with a win over Victori Smolchenkova, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. The day started Nadia Hilton-Adams losing a tough match up at No. 4 singles to Angelique Gouin as Hilton-Adams took the first set to a tiebreaker before losing 6-1 in the second. In the next singles match of the day, Sheyla Ramirez lost a three-setter to Cynthia Carrie, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
N.C. A&T took all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The freshman duo of Smolikova and Chawla teamed together in doubles to beat Roxana Daneshjoo and Makhneva 8-1. Junior Khalia Powell and Hilton-Adams were winners at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 win over Cynthia Carrieer and Angelique Gouin. The last doubles match of the day had Ramirez and Martinez beating Polina Novachuk and Smolchenkova 8-6.
N.C. A&T will return to conference play on Tuesday, March 28 when they host North Carolina Central at noon at the Aggie Tennis Complex.
