GREENSBORO (February 5, 2017) – Freshman Adair Bartra had to be in a position of winning with injuries to the North Carolina A&T men's tennis team. Bartra responded by getting his first win of the season, but it was not enough in a 6-1 loss College of Charleston Sunday afternoon at the Aggies Tennis Complex.
Bartra picked up the Aggies one point in the No. 3 singles spot defeating the Cougars Vasily Kichigin 4-6, 6-3 and (10-7) in the tiebreaker. Bartra hit a spectacular down-the-line running forehand shot winner to win the match, as he was falling to the ground.
“With two players out the team had to have others step up” said director of tennis development William Crutchfield. “Bartra played an outstanding match hitting two crowd-pleasing shots in the third-set tiebreaker to take the lead.”
Brett Caban took his match to a second-set tiebreaker in the No. 4 position against Rodrigo Encinas but came up short 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) in the tiebreaker. Nicolas Arduh occupied the No. 1 spot for N.C. A&T losing to College of Charleston's Juan Estevarena 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2, Dreshuan Jarmon lost to Benedikt Henning 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5, Jordan Lawrence lost to Ryan Khan 6-2, 6-0. Rounding out singles play for the Aggies at No. 6, Keiston France lost.
Doubles play went similarly for the Aggies as Arduh and Nikko Barr lost to Henning and Easton Thomas at the No. 1 spot 7-4. Bartra and Lawrence lost to Jake Kusmider and Luke Kusmider at the No. 2 spot 6-4. Jarmon and France also lost.
“There is progress made with each practice and match toward playing Aggie Tennis,” said Crutchfield. “The season has been a great experience for everyone involved.”
Next the Aggies play Coastal Carolina on Friday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m., at the Aggie Tennis Complex.
