CHARLOTTE, NC – North Carolina A&T men's tennis sophomore Jindrich Brill won the Charlotte Amateur championship over the weekend at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus. Brill won four matches on his way to winning the title, including the semifinal match over Charlotte's No. 1 singles player, Lance Cochran, 6-3, 6-1.
"I am very glad for my performance this weekend," said Brill. "I train hard, and I showed it this weekend."
Brill opened the tournament on Saturday morning with a win over Methodist University's Aaron Zoubek. He advanced to the quarterfinals, where he found success against Methodist's James Giles, 6-0, 6-0. After defeating Cochran, Brill's championship matchup came against a familiar opponent that he likely faces in practice on a routine basis, graduate teammate Ian Pedersen.
Brill defeated his fellow Aggie, 6-2, 6-1, to give the Aggies first and second-place finishes. The two then teamed together on Sunday to take the doubles title. The duo opened Sunday's play by knocking off the Methodist team of Cameron Roth and Caio Lira before defeating the 49ers duo of Cochran and Peter Glenn.
In the same tournament, Brill won his first career singles and doubles titles. Meanwhile, the Aggies won the Charlotte tournament for the first time in four years.
A&T had other excellent performances over the weekend. Pedersen's run to the final started with a 6-1, 6-0 over Johson & Wales's Hugo Cossais. Pedersen followed by defeating Christopher Love before advancing to the finals by defeating fellow Aggie Kaua Santos, 6-4, 6-3. In addition to Santos advancing to the semifinals, Mathieu Dussaubat won his first-round match before losing to Cochran in the quarters.
