DAVIDSON (February 4, 2017) – The North Carolina A&T men's tennis team lost their second match of the season Saturday afternoon to a solid Davidson program at the Davidson Tennis Courts, 7-0.
“We are getting closer and closer each time,” said N.C. A&T director of tennis development, William Crutchfield. “We were competitive and played rather aggressively, but we allowed unforced errors, and we cannot continue to allow that to happen. The good thing is that we have seen a transition in practice where the team has gone to another level, a higher level of performing, and each week we will anticipate continued growth and improvement.”
The day was highlighted by a No. 4 singles match between N.C. A&T's John Wilson IV and Ricky Saad. Wilson IV battled Saad for two sets before losing 6-4, 6-4. “He played a very exciting match,” said Crutchfield.
Davidson was very strong in the remaining matches. Sophomore Nicolas Arduh lost at No. 1 singles to Shamael Chaudhry, 6-1, 6-2. Junior Dreshaun Jarmon lost at No. 2 singles to David Hager, 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, at No. 3 singles Axel Fries defeated N.C. A&T's Adair Bartra in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The Aggies also lost at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Davidson won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point.
“Going forward, we just have to simplify the game,” said Crutchfield. “The system here at A&T is designed to simplify. It is meant for our athletes to just play without overthinking and that is what we will attempt to do each and every time.”
The Aggie men return to action 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5 to face College of Charleston at home at Aggie Tennis Complex.
