N.C. A&T Women's Tennis Loses Season Opener

ELON (January 16, 2017) – North Carolina A&T tennis began a new era on MLK day with interim head coach Shawn Hendrix and director of tennis development William Crutchfield. Despite the women's team losing to Elon 7-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

“We have a new team, new system and new program and the team is responding and embracing the change,” said director of tennis development William Crutchfield.  “The team is looking forward to their next match to erase the memory of this loss.”

Matchups against Elon normally include numerous 6-0, 6-0 finish. That was not the case Monday as the Aggies were competitive in nearly all their singles matches. Sophomore Sheyla Ramirez kicked off the season for the Aggies in the No. 1 singles position. Ramirez is coming off a three-win season but was not able to outlast Suzanne Zenoni 6-1, 6-2. Junior Nadia Hilton-Adams lost to Maria Paraja 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.

Another promising sophomore in Angelica Martinez put up the closest fight against her No. 4 opponent Natalia Janowicz, but came up short 6-3, 6-2. Junior Khalia Powell, who is coming off the best season of any women's player in 25 years with her 7-6 mark in 2016, went up against Kirsten Ward as she lost her season opener 6-1, 6-0.

Freshman Renata Ruiz Rabadan lost to Alex Koniaev, 6-3, 6-0.  To round out singles competition for the Aggies, Kanishka Chawla lost to Sofia Edo in the No. 6 spot 6-4, 6-1. “The individual matches were much closer than the final scores reflect,” said Crutchfield.

Elon swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.

Both Aggie tennis teams will travel to Wofford on Jan. 21 for matches against the Terriers. It will be the season-opener for the men and the women will look to bounce back and continue building off their performance against the Phoenix.
