GREENSBORO (Mar. 29, 2016) -- North Carolina A&T could not repeat their victory in the rematch against cross-town rival UNC Greensboro on Tuesday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Aggies came up short against the Spartans, 6-2. The Aggies won a 9-8 contest last week at NewBridge Park Stadium in downtown Greensboro.
N.C. A&T only had two hits, but sophomore Milton Rivera had one of them to extend his hitting streak to 10.
The Aggies took the lead early in the contest after getting the first two batters on base. Center fielder Myles Sowell used his quick feet to reach third on a Milton Rivera single before reaching home on a wild pitch.
N.C. A&T would score again in an exciting eighth inning for their final run of the game. A walk and a pitch that Cameron Hearn in the back put runners on first and second. Sowell reached on a fielder's choice, with Hearn out at second. A consecutive fielder's choice put Rivera on first with an RBI as Jarrett Norman crossed home.
Aggies starting pitcher, left-hander Danny Garrett hit his stride in the third inning, but not before the Spartans put three on the board. UNCG matched the Aggies score then took the lead in the first. Designated hitter Dillon Stewart scored from second on a single through the left side by Collin Woody. A follow up double by Andrew Moritz advanced L.J. Kalawaia home. The Aggies closed out the inning with a double play.
In the second, the Spartans shortstop Cesar Trejo scored on an attempted pickoff in which Garrett overthrew James Rorie at first. Garrett allowed two hits after the second inning before being replaced by RHP Jordan Virgil to start the seventh. UNCG scored their final two runs of the game off a two-run home run to right field by Kalawaia.
N.C. A&T (6-20) will take on the Winthrop Eagles Wednesday in Rock Hill, SC. Winthrop (12-12) won 15-4 in War Memorial Stadium on March 16. The road games continue for the Aggies as they travel to Savannah, Ga., for a three-game MEAC series against Savannah State this weekend. They return home on April 6 to face Elon.
