Box Score GREENSBORO (October 28, 2016) – Junior Samara Brown had a career night and the Aggies remained firmly in second place in the MEAC southern division with a 3-1 win (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21) over Savannah State Friday night at Moore Gymnasium. The Aggies improve to 8-11 overall and 5-1 in the MEAC. The Tigers fell to 1-24 overall and 1-7 in the MEAC.
Brown posted a career-high 20 kills while recording her third consecutive double-double and fourth of the season by adding 17 digs to her totals. Brown had her second-highest hitting percentage of the season as her six attack errors on 42 attempts gave her a .333 hit percentage. Brown also had three solo blocks. Junior Jasmine Lindor also gave the Tigers fits defensively with six total blocks. Fifth-year middle hitter Te'Borah Hawkins-Hollingsworth added four total blocks and freshman Leila Haynesworth added three block assists.
Freshman outside hitter Christa Wilson contributed with 10 kills and nine digs, while setters Liz Martino and Kayla Finnerty both played instrumental rolls, picking up a combined 39 assists. Keniah Rivera Santiago had 19 digs.
N.C. A&T closed out the first set strong with kills from Wilson and Brown. Then the Tigers did something they had done only once in 13 matches before Friday, they defeated N.C. A&T in a set. The Aggies recovered in Set 3 with a consistent showing. They hit .243 in the set as Brown dominated offensively and Santiago dominated defensively. Brown had six kills and one attack errors on 10 attempts (.500), while Santiago had nine digs. A kill from Brown gave N.C. A&T a 12-4 lead halfway through the set, but the Tigers kept slowly trying to claw back, eventually getting the score to 20-16. However, kills from Haynesworth and Brown closed out the set with a 2-1 Aggies advantage.
Consistency wavered throughout the fourth set where the Aggies had nine errors with 11 kills to hit .062. The team picked up four points on two kills and two attack errors to bring up the match point at 24-19. Savannah State brought the score to 24-21 on an attack error from Hawkins-Hollingsworth before a service error from Alaina Monroe gave the Aggies the match, ending a two-match slide.
MEAC action continues in Moore Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon as the Aggies take on South Carolina State at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs (0-23, 0-8 MEAC) head to Greensboro after a 3-0 loss to N.C. Central on Friday night in Durham.
