DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Junior Janika May hit her second home run of the season but it wasn't enough as the North Carolina A&T softball team fell 6-2 to Bethune-Cookman in a MEAC contest, Sunday afternoon at Sunnyland Park.
Sunday's game featured a combined seven errors from both teams, with B-CU owning four of them. A&T (13-25 overall) dropped to 5-7 in the league while the Wildcats (15-25) improved to 8-1 in the MEAC.
With one out in the sixth inning, May crushed a solo home run on a 1-2 count to cut B-CU's advantage to 6-2. A&T's attempt to rally in the seventh was cut short as B-CU's defense recorded three straight outs for the win.
Melissa Berouty gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single up the middle that scored Kaitlin Alamprese who led off the inning with a double.
In the third inning the Aggies evened the score and used a Wildcat error with the bases loaded to notch its first run. B-CU stretched its lead to 5-1 in the bottom half of the inning where it scored four unearned runs off three hits and an Aggie error.
The Wildcats added one more run in the fourth when the Aggies failed to pickoff Calesha Shelly who stole third and scored off an error.
Junior Alejandra Barcenas led the Aggies with two hits. Alamprese was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. May fell to 6-14 in the circle and tabbed a pair of strikeouts. Sabrina Anguiano (12-21) finished with a game-high six strikeouts.
A&T will host UNC Wilmington in a single non-conference game on Wednesday, April 22 at 5 p.m.
