RALEIGH – North Carolina A&T played its second midweek game of the week and came away with a 16-5 loss to North Carolina State at Doak Field. The Aggies dropped to 3-18 ahead of its fourth MEAC three-game series to be played at Florida A&M this weekend.
Milton Rivera led the Aggies by going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Rivera leads the team in multiple-hit games with seven. The Aggies used seven pitchers on a staff day with left-handed starter Danny Garrett (0-1) taking the loss.
The Wolfpack (14-9) produced 18 hits and two players with two-hit games and two players with four-hit games. Brock Deatherage went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI and Jake Armstrong was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI. Preston Palmeiro, son of former major leaguer Rafael Palmeiro, had a 4-for-6 day with three RBI and two runs scored. Andrew Knizner closed out the stellar offensive day for the Wolfpack by going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Aggies trailed 7-0 early but got on the board in the third. With runners at third and second with one out, freshman center fielder Myles Sowell hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score A.J. Hunt, who reached on a walk, from third. Rivera would later score on a wild pitch to score the Aggies second run.
The Aggies were able to cut into The Pack's lead even more in the fourth inning. Adan Ordonez hit an RBI single to center, scoring Ryan Jantsch who reached base on a walk. After The Pack put Evan Mendoza on the mound, Hunt hit an RBI triple to score Ordonez to cut The Pack's lead to 7-4. An infield single by Rivera cut that lead to 7-5 as Hunt scored.
The Pack would pull away as they scored nine runs over their last three at-bats to secure the win. The Aggies open their three-game series with the Rattlers on Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla., with a 1 p.m., doubleheader. The series ends on Sunday with a 1 p.m., game.
