Aggies Fall To UNCG At NewBridge

GREENSBORO – Freshman left-hander Evan Miranda had another solid outing during the week for the North Carolina A&T baseball team, but UNC Greensboro pulled away from the Aggies late in a 10-0 win over A&T NewBridge Bank Park, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Tuesday night.

Miranda (0-4) had a season-high in pitches thrown (88), strikeouts (7) and innings pitched (6). He gave up four runs (three earned) and four hits in the process. But the Spartans (10-12) were able to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard by using six pitchers on a staff day.

Andrew Wantz (4-0) picked up the win after giving up two hits and striking out over four innings.  The Aggies were even able to cool off freshman Aggies slugger Adan Ordonez who hit .529 last week in five games. He came into Tuesday's game on a seven-game hitting streak but went 0-for-3.

The Aggies best chance to score came in the third when senior shortstop Brandon Mitchell doubled down the left field line with one out. Mitchell moved to third on a throwing error by Wantz after he tried to pick off Mitchell at second. Sophomore first baseman Kyle Clary then hit a ground ball to third that UNCG third baseman Collin Woody picked up on a bounce and tossed home to throw out Mitchell.

A&T still only trailed 2-0 going into the fifth when Miranda ran into his worst jam. He gave up a leadoff single to Devin Ruiz. Ruiz moved to third on a bunt single by Tyler Long. Tripp Shelton also laid down a bunt, but a throwing error as the Aggies tried to throw out Shelton at first allowed Ruiz to score. It also put Long and Shelton in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Zac MacAneney put the Spartans ahead 4-0.

The Spartans scored six more runs over their last two at-bats to put the game out of reach. MacAneney and Hunter King had three RBI apiece. MacAneney, King and Long had two hits apiece.

The Aggies return to action 6 p.m., Wednesday when they travel to Raleigh to face N.C. State.
