Aggies Lose At HPU

HIGH POINT – High Point University used a strong bullpen performance to down the North Carolina A&T baseball team, 8-3 Tuesday night at Williard Stadium.

It was the Aggies (2-13) fifth straight loss as they will look to snap that streak Wednesday night at home when they face Longwood at 6.

Adan Ordonez led the Aggies by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. A&T had its way with freshman right-hander Austin Heinz. The Panthers gave Heinz an early 2-0 lead before the Aggies responded in the third inning. With two outs, senior Brandon Wilkerson doubled down the left field line. Freshman Milton Rivera followed with another double to cut the Panthers lead to 2-1.

Right-hander Tyler Britton replaced Heinz on the mound after the Riley double and walked the first batter he faced in senior Brandon Mitchell. After Rivera stole third, he was able to score on a fielding error by HPU third baseman Dane McDermott to tie the game at 2.

Josh Spano gave the Panthers the lead back for good when he homered to left-center field to open the third inning off A&T left-hand starter Evan Miranda. Miranda (0-3) went three innings and gave up three runs on five hits. The Panthers scored one run apiece in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The Aggies got to within two runs on an RBI single from freshman Myles Sowell, but the Panthers (8-10) responded with an RBI double from Hunter Lee to make it 6-3. The lead was good enough for the Panthers relief pitchers. After Heinz left the hill, the Panthers' four relief pitchers gave up just three hits and run over 6.1 innings pitched as Britton (2-1) picked up the win.

Lee led the way for HPU by going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
