"Our
deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are
powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens
us"
This quote, by
Marianne Williamson, has always been one of my favorites, but since graduating
from North Carolina A&T, it has special meaning; a special connection to my
experience as a player under Coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs.
No, coach Bibbs never
quoted these words, but they definitely remind me of her in her constant
challenge of me as I wrestled with my leadership potential and as I pushed past
insecurities and self-doubt. Her supportive presence was always there.
Coach
Bibbs made it clear that it was ok, in fact, expected, that I deliver my best,
both on and off the court, always, without exception! She set the bar high for
all of her players and supported each of us as we worked toward meeting her
high standards.
It is no secret that my achievements as a Lady Aggie are
in large part due to the love, support and dedication of Coach Bibbs. From day
one, she embraced me with tough love and helped me realize my true potential as
a student, athlete and young lady. She didn't give up on me even during those times
when I was ready to throw in the towel.
Yes, I know that God blessed me with my
talent, but Coach Bibbs helped to 'stir up' my gifts and always challenged me
to be my best! There is no way I would have won Player of the Year if it had
not been for Coach Bibbs accepting nothing but my best, each and every day!
I thank God for Coach Bibbs' presence
in my life; for her insight and inspiration and for the confidence she had in
me, even when I didn't have it in myself. I am thankful for her Godly wisdom, for
being an amazing leader, but also a great listener, and for being a mom away
from home when I really needed one.
It is said that, 'If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more,
do more and become more, you are a leader.' Coach Bibbs
has definitely inspired me in so many ways. As a basketball coach, she challenged
me to always be my best; as a mentor she encouraged me to never give up on my
dreams; and as a woman of God she cautioned me to always keep Him first in my
life! She has left an indelible impression on my life and an
amazing legacy for me to follow!
Coach
Bibbs, Congratulations on your 500th win! You are an amazing Coach,
but even more importantly, an outstanding person. Thank you for your guidance,
support and friendship.
Love
always,
Brittanie
