Aggies Use Several Pitchers, Lose to App State

BOONE - For North Carolina A&T, it was pitcher by committee against Appalachian State. The Aggies used four pitchers and kept the game close in what was a 6-1 loss to the Mountaineers.

The Aggies used numerous pitchers after playing at Virginia Tech the night before. In order to preserve his arms for a weekend tilt at Delaware State this weekend, head coach Keith Shumate started Caleb Shelton, and spread the pitching duties around in order not to put too many innings on any of his arms.

Shelton went 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs.  He was replaced in the third inning by Brett Young with the bases loaded. Young got Will Callaway to fly out to right field, but the fly ball allowed Daniel Kassouf to score from third on a sacrifice fly. An infield single Hector Crespo allowed another Mountaineers' run to score for a 2-0 lead.

Luke Tendler provided the Aggies with a run in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Tendler singled through the left side to score Andre McKoy. Riley tried to tie the game at 2 on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.

The Mountaineers added two more runs off of Young before Tyler Boone took over in the fifth inning. ASU added two more runs to extend its lead. The Aggies had a chance to rally in the ninth. Riley and Tendler reached base on singles. They moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but a strike out would end the game as the Aggies dropped to 14-27.

Riley and Tendler had two hits apiece. The Mountaineers, who also used four pitchers, are 26-18.
