GREENSBORO
- North Carolina A&T got another warm up before it ventures into two consecutive
rivalry games next week. Senior guard Nic Simpson hit all four of his
3-pointers on his way to 14 points as the Aggies defeated Barber Scotia 88-53 at
Corbett Sports Center on Friday night.
It
was the Aggies second straight blowout win after their 55-point win against
Johnson & Wales on Wednesday earned them their largest margin of victory in
42 years.
The
Aggies (3-3) will now face the challenge of playing cross-town rival UNC
Greensboro 7 p.m., Monday at the Greensboro Coliseum. Five days later they
travel to Durham, N.C., to face archrival N.C. Central at 4 p.m.
"Each
game is an opportunity for my team to improve whether it is UNCG or Barber
Scotia," said N.C. A&T head coach Jerry Eaves. "We want to be as good as we can be in the
beginning of March. This is a process
and these two games (UNCG and N.C. Central) are a part of the process. They'll be both competitive, hard played
games, but it's not going to make or break us.
They're both great rivalries. Next week is going to be a lot of fun."
Before
the fun begins, the Aggies had to take care of the Saints. It didn't take long
for the Aggies to take control of the game. An Austin Witter put back started
an 11-0 run that gave the Aggies a 23-7 lead with 10:22 remaining in the first
half.
An
Austin Witter steal and dunk gave the Aggies a 51-31 halftime lead. Witter came
off the bench to score 14 points and grab 11 rebounds. It marked the second
straight night a double-double came from off the Aggies bench as Kam Shepherd
did it on Wednesday night.
"We're
going to have to play harder," said Eaves. "That's the only issue I have, is
we're not playing hard enough to compete with the teams we are going to face in
these next two games. I think the kids
will be willing to step to the challenge, and we'll have to be ready to go."
Rodney
Carney had 19 for the Saints.
