GREENSBORO - Two significant things happened on Sunday at War Memorial Stadium.
The North Carolina A&T baseball team clinched the No. 2 seed in this month's MEAC Tournament, and six seniors came away with a win on Senior Day as the Aggies completed a three-game sweep of Delaware State with an 8-2 win.
A&T (22-23) is 12-3 in the conference with its average margin of victory in conference play standing at eight runs per game. Sunday's game followed that theme. The Aggies got off to an early lead and let their pitching guide them the rest of the way.
Brent Moore (5-3) pitched six scoreless innings, surrendered just two hits and struck out four to pick up the win. Before the fourth inning, Moore already had a 5-0 lead with the Aggies' biggest inning coming in the third.
With one out and Xavier Macklin at first, sophomore Marquis Riley hit his sixth home run of the season way beyond the right field wall. The Aggies started another rally within the inning as Alex Grubb and Kelvin Freeman followed Riley's homer with back-to-back singles. Senior James Howard then hit a two-out single to center field to score Grubb for the Aggies fifth run.
Riley led the Aggies with two hits and two RBIs. Howard went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Howard along with seniors George Hines, Chris Watson, Nick Rogers, Jonathan Smith and Lester Rivenbark were honored before Sunday's game. The highlight of the ceremony was Hines' mother Donnie Hines singing The Star Spangled Banner.
The Aggie seniors have one more home game to play, a May 10 contest against Duke at 7 p.m. Before they host Duke, the Aggies will close out conference play against Coppin State in Baltimore next weekend. The MEAC Tournament begins May 20 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
