ORMOND BEACH, Fla., -- Bethune-Cookman finally broke through against
Jennifer Luper as the Wildcats defeated North Carolina A&T 3-0 in the winners' bracket game of the 2010 MEAC Softball Tournament played at the Sports Complex.
Luper had gone 12 straight innings without surrendering a run during the tournament. But in the third, Bethune-Cookman junior Allison Garcia hit a two-run RBI double to center field.
The win advances the Wildcats to Saturday's championship game at 1 p.m. The Aggies will have another chance to advance to the championship round. They play again at 6 p.m., against defending champion Florida A&M. The winner of that game will be the Wildcats' opponent on Saturday.
Garcia helped herself on the mound as well. She pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out five to improve to 23-14 on the season. Luper (16-14) found herself in more trouble in the Wildcats' fourth.
After Joanna Hernandez singled, the Aggies recorded two outs. But walks to Ashton Hinds and Aurelia Gamch loaded the bases for the Wildcats with two outs. The Aggies turned to reliever Sasha Philpot, but Philpot walked Garcia on six pitches to force in a run.
A&T had a chance to rally in the seventh. Lillian Bullock led off the inning with a single. But Larson hit a sharp line drive to second that was caught by Cesley Tafoya. Tafoya found Bullock leaning off base and threw her out for the double play. Channing Statham followed with a single, but a fly out ended the game as the Aggies dropped to 27-26 on the season.
Garcia finished the game with three RBIs. Gamch and Michelle Banuelos-Smith had two hits apiece.
