BOONE – North Carolina A&T fell
victim to a walk-off double in the
seventh inning as Appalachian State defeated the Aggies 3-2 in the
second game of a baseball doubleheader Tuesday evening. Appalachian
State won the first game 15-4.
Sophomore Xavier Macklin was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the first
game.
Senior George Hines led the Aggies by going 3-for-3 with a run scored
in
the second game.
The Mountaineers got a fortunate break in the second contest. An error
in the seventh inning allowed Doug Jones to reach base. Hector Crespo
then stepped up and hit an RBI double down the right field line to
score
Jones for the game winner.
Appalachian State was able to rally from a two-run deficit. The Aggies
took the lead in the fourth. After singles from Hines and Dario
Little,
Hines was moved to third on a fly out by senior Nick Rogers. Macklin
scored Hines on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Aggies lead. Dario Little
created the Aggies' second run.
In his steal attempt of second, first baseman David Towarnicky threw
the
ball away allowing Little to score from first base. The Mountaineers
tied the game in the fifth thanks to a Jones two-run homer.
John Smith (0-2) took the loss in the second game. Nick Oelker had a
quality start. He went 5 1/3 innings and gave up just five hits. The
Aggies are in action Saturday when they face Bethune-Cookman in a 1
p.m.
