GREENSBORO - Junior Jennifer Luper was perfect on Saturday and so was the North Carolina A&T softball team. Luper tossed a perfect game as the Aggies swept North Carolina Central 9-0 and 7-0 at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex.
In the second game, senior Sasha Philpot had a no-hitter going into the seventh before Andrea Searls led off the inning with a double to left-center field.
Luper pitched five innings in a game that ended before the standard seven innings because the Aggies led by eight or more runs after the fifth. Luper relied heavily on her defense as she struck out just two of the 15 batters she faced. She improved to 11-10 on the season after throwing just 48 pitches.
The Aggies offensive might was led by seniors Lillian Bullock, Jessie Larson and Channing Statham who all had two RBIs. Larson and Bullock homered.
Bullock's homer came in the first off of former Aggie Aurora Baker. It was Bullock's 34th career home run, which is a school record. Larson hit her team-leading eighth home run of the season. Only Bullock has more homers in A&T history than Larson who hit her 21st career homer on Saturday.
Game 2 saw Ashley Carter record two hits, and she scored a run. Larson had two RBIs. Leading 4-0, the Aggies broke the game open in the seventh. Carter's lead-off triple led to an RBI single from freshman Brittany Wade. Wade moved to second after a sacrifice bunt, which led to a RBI double from Bullock.
The Aggies closed out their scoring when senior Yahamma White scored on a Larson groundout. Philpot (9-11) got the win after going seven innings, walking four and striking out five Eagles. A&T improved to 20-22 on the season. The Eagles are 7-37.
