GREENSBORO - Throughout Wednesday night's match against arch-rival N.C. Central, North Carolina A&T got of to too many slow starts in two out of the three sets as the Eagles defeated the Aggies 3-0 (25-21, 21, 14) at Moore Gymnasium.
Sophomore Andrea Evans led the Aggies with six kills. Freshman Jeana Daniels added four kills, six digs and four blocks.
Belinda Behncke-Biney led the Eagles with 14 kills and just one attack error. Raven King contributed with 15 digs.
But it wasn't Behncke-Biney who got the Eagles going. Four Aggie attack errors helped the Eagles jump out to a 17-9 lead in the first set. A block of N.C. Central's Maritsann Sinclair attack by Jeana Daniels and Elisha Boyer reversed the momentum to the Aggies favor.
Evans completed an 11-3 Aggies run with a kill that tied the set at 20. Behncke-Biney regained the lead for N.C. Central with a kill, but a Sashalee Wallen attack error tied the set again. The Eagles ended the set by scoring the final four points, two of those points coming on service aces.
A slow start didn't plague the Aggies in the second set, but they did eventually find themselves down 16-12 thanks to a Tocarra Jones kill. Freshman Mia Gray helped the Aggies fight back again. Her kill pulled the Aggies to within one at 20-19. Two straight kills by Behncke-Biney and a service ace by Jzima-Malaki Kalao put the Eagles in command for their second set win.
An 11-1 start by the Eagles in the third put the Eagles (5-18) on pace to capture the win over N.C. A&T. The Aggies return to action Friday night at 6 when they play their conference opener against Norfolk State from Corbett Sports Center.
