ALBUQUERQUE,
N.M. –
The
North Carolina A&T women's basketball team could not slow down a
hot
shooting New Mexico team in the second half as the Lobos pulled away
from the Aggies with a 77-55 win in the Holiday Inn & Suites
Express
Midtown Thanksgiving Tournament played at The Pit.
The Aggies were led by freshman JaQuayla Berry's 14 points. The Aggies
played without leading scorer and 3-point shooter Ta'Wuana “Tweet”
Cook.
“We started two freshmen tonight and we had our senior sitting out, so
we really had a young team out there,'' said North Carolina A&T
head
coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “It was good to see our freshmen get
another
opportunity to grow. I don't think the score indicates how hard they
played tonight. We're playing some tough competition, so we're using
all
of this as a learning experience.”
The Aggies witnessed how well the Lobos can shoot the ball. After
taking
a first-half lead and going into the half down just 34-27, the Aggies
ran into near perfection. The Lobos hit eight of their first 11 shots
of
the second half, including four 3-pointers to take a 54-36 lead with
12:11 to play.
The Lobos used that surge to keep the Aggies at bay the rest of the
second half. The Lobos were led by Amy Beggin's 19 points on 7-for-12
shooting. As a team, the Lobos shot 62.1 percent in the second half.
The Aggies will play in the consolation game Saturday evening at 5
p.m.,
against Yale.
