Don Corbett came to N.C. A&T after spending eight seasons at his alma mater, Lincoln University (1971-79), where he compiled a 159-58 record. He still stands as the all-time leader in wins at the university. Corbett became the head coach at N.C. A&T in 1979. He compiled a 256-143 (.642) record in 14 seasons. His teams won 20 or more games six times, including a 26-3 mark during the 1987-88 season. It is the most wins ever compiled in a season by a N.C. A&T men's basketball team.Â

Corbett's teams won seven regular-season championships. They also won an incredible seven straight MEAC tournament titles from 1982-88, tying the NCAA record. In addition, they defeated the same team – Howard – all seven times. Five times, Corbett won both the regular-season title and the MEAC title in the same season. Also, during his tenure, his team held the nation's longest home winning streak, winning 38 straight games from 1985-88.Â

The Aggies also made two NIT appearances during Corbett's tenure. Six times under Corbett, an Aggie won MEAC player of the year. Joe Binion was a three-time winner along with Eric Boyd, George Cale and Claude Williams. In 2006, N.C. A&T named the playing surface at Corbett Sports Center in honor of Corbett and former men's coach Cal Irvin.Â

Corbett is a member of the following Halls of Fame: The MEAC, Guilford County, Lincoln University and the MIAA.Â
