Kia Mason was hired as the new North Carolina A&T women’s basketball director of operations by head coach Tarrell Robinson on August 1, 2019.
Mason comes from working as the ACES Site Coordinator for Guilford County Schools and as part of the statscrew and game-night communications support for the Greensboro Swarm, an NBA “G” League team.
Starting in October of 2016, Mason assisted the Swarm’s communication staff during games and captured in-game action shots for social media since October 2016.
Mason coordinated and directed four-star after school programs and performed all administrative duties for the program including payroll and creating and following budget for self-supporting program. She also managed all fiscal aspects of the program and produced financial reports and recruited, interviewed and recommended candidates for the ACES staff.
In her free time, Mason also worked as a team manager for the N.C. A&T football team for a year starting in August of 2015. She assisted with the daily operations of the football program and issued uniforms and equipment to the players and coaches. She also assisted with the team travel arrangements, postgame meals and assisted with the inventory of equipment.
Before working for Guilford County, she spent three years at the Kathleen Price Bryan YMCA in Greensboro as the sports director, where she organized, implemented and oversaw all youth and adult sports programs in addition to recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling and supervising all volunteer and paid staff.
Most of her early working career was in sports information. She was the assistant director of communications for the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) for 16 months starting in February of 2009. She assisted the coordination of all publicity efforts for 19 conference sponsored sports.
Prior to the SWAC, Mason was an event assistant at The Event Authority in Charlotte, N.C., where she designed, set-up and executed major sporting events for five years starting 2005. In 2004, she served as a media relations assistant for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Also in 2004, she also was a media relations volunteer for the 2005 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament first and
second rounds in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Mason had her first N.C. A&T experience as the sports information director for 1 ½ years starting in 2001. She oversaw the writing, editing and designing of all publications, including media guides, football yearbook, game-day programs, tournament guides and game notes.
Prior to A&T, she spent a year at Coppin State as the assistant director of athletics communications. She was the primary contact for local, regional and national media for all women’s sports as well as wrestling and men’s tennis.
She had her first post-graduate position with Elon University in 2000 as a sports information intern.
Mason began her career at Morgan State, where she was also a sports information student intern. During her career, Mason has also served as a freelance writer for various publications.
She completed her bachelor’s of science degree in physical education with a concentration in sports administration from Morgan State in June 2000. Mason returned to the triad to obtain her master’s degree at High Point University in December 2004 in sports studies.
