Phillip Shumpert

Phillip Shumpert was named the interim head coach for North Carolina A&T men's basketball on August 18, 2022 after serving as an assistant under Will Jones for nearly three years.

Shumpert joined the North Carolina A&T men’s basketball coaching staff under Jay Joyner on November 4, 2019. 
 
Shumpert will coach the Aggies wing players. He will also be responsible for scouting the Aggies upcoming opponents, assuring players are in the proper housing on campus, identifying and evaluating talent who want to sign with N.C. A&T and monitoring the academics of the student-athletes. 
 
In addition, Shumpert will supervise the student managers and schedule and conduct community service appearances.
 
He comes to N.C. A&T after serving as the associate varsity boys coach at Starr’s Mills High School in Fayetteville, Ga., for a season. He has also spent time as a basketball consultant for Georgia Hoop Circle for the past two years.
 
Shumpert got his start in coaching out of college at Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga., where he served as the assistant girls varsity basketball coach during the 2006-07 season. 
 
From there, he began his first stint at Lawson Community College as the assistant men’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator. Shumpert left for a year to be the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at West Alabama before returning to be the head men’s basketball coach at Lawson from 2009-13. He also returned as head coach for one season in 2015-16.
 
In 2010, Shumpert had a historic year at Lawson. He led the team to a 25-6 record, a No. 21 ranking in the NJCAA polls and an Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) North Division title with a 13-1 conference record. Shumpert won the Glen Clem Award for Alabama Junior College Coach of the Year and Region 22 Coach of the Year for his efforts.
 
Shumpert coached and developed Lawson’s first All-American in over three decades on top of four All-Region players in 2011. The following year, he led the team to a 24-8 record and brought in a 43rd-ranked class according to jucorecruiting.com. Shumpert also had three all-region and all-conference players and two NJCAA players of the week.
 
Shumpert prides himself on being a developer of talent. During his time as a JUCO coach, he has played an integral part in sending 45 players to the next level including 26 players who went on to Division I schools. He has facilitated and coached several AAU camps from 2004-15.
 
Prior to his successes as a coach and recruiter, Shumpert played college ball at Itawamba Community College, John C. Calhoun Community College and Albany State University. He graduated from The United States Sports Academy in 2006.
