James Daniels

Coach Daniels is entering into his seventh season as the assistant track and field coach at North Carolina A&T State University. Daniels is responsible for coaching the women’s and men’s Sprint and hurdles. In the previous four seasons, Daniels has continually built upon the North Carolina A&T’s excellence in sprints, hurdles and relays. During the past four seasons, the sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams have been regionally and nationally ranked. In addition, school records have been set in the women’s 60 meter hurdles, 60 meter dash and 400 meter hurdles. On the men’s side records fell in the 55 meter dash and 100 meter dash.

He has coached five individuals to eleven individual MEAC championships and five MEAC relay championships. In 2003, Daniels assisted in sending five Aggies and two former Aggies to the USATF Indoor Nationals, the largest group in school history.

He is considered by his peers as a well-studied authority on sports nutrition and speed development. He has coached at all levels of track and field and has served as a consultant to numerous elite athletes.

Coach Daniels is a highly regarded lecturer and has been a yearly guess speaker at the Nike Elite Summit and Coaches Clinic held at the University of South Carolina. He was one of approximately 20 coaches in the country to participate in the USATF Elite Coaches Sprint and Hurdle Summit held in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2003. Coach Daniels is USA Track & Field Level II Certified in sprints, hurdles and relays.

His previous coaching experience was at Christopher Newport University as an assistant women’s basketball coach and men’s and women’s assistant track coach. As the assistant women’s basketball coach, the Lady Captains were 45-11 in conference competition and 89-44 overall. During his five seasons, the Lady Captains set numerous school records and earned the school’s first-ever advancement to the Division III Sweet 16.

He also worked with Karen Barefoot, the first player in NCAA history – male or female – to score 2000 points and have 1000 assists in a career. As an assistant coach for the Division III national power in track and field, he was a part of four National Championship teams, coached two national record holders and more than 114 All-American citations were earned.

Coach Daniels graduated Cum Laude from Hampton University as well as earning Golden Key National Society Scholar honors and becoming an Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society Inductee. Coach Daniels is married and has three children.
