SPORTS HALL OF FAME HISTORY
The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to honor former athletes and persons who excelled in their performances in or connected with North Carolina A&T State University varsity sports. These persons have brought esteem, recognition and fame to themselves and their alma mater. In the 1960s, some A&T Alumni, aware of the lack of recognition accorded African-American athletes, and realizing the need for assistance by the athletics department, organized the Athletic Liason Committee. In the early 70s, six members of the committee formed the A&T Aggie Sportsman Club and seriously explored the idea of an Aggie Sports Hall of Fame to promote A&T Athletics. Prime movers of this group were "Jug" Douglass, Helburn "Bud" Meadows, Matthew Wingate, Fred Dawson, W. Edward Jenkins and Joe Williams. They were alert to the fact that A&T students and the nation knew little about the exploits of stellar A&T Aggie sports heroes such as "Horse" Lane, Sam Bruce, "Stonewall" Jackson, Ed Martin, "Pecky" Conway and more!
Even though these visionaries armed themselves with a Hall of Fame dream, the dreamers discovered sponsoring the Sports Hall of Fame required expertise and finances. For the former, they relied upon the late Matthew Brown, a former A&T football and tennis coach, who freely used his experience to guide the fledgling group. Aggies J. Kenneth Lee, attorney, and W. Edward Jenkins, architect, solved the finance problem. Bob Barringer, a local businessman, joined them in sponsoring the first event in 1971. As a result, many outstanding A&T student-athletes and coaches have earned enshrinement into the Hall of Fame, and the waiting list of nominees is lengthy and impressive.
We have a glorious heritage on the various playing surfaces, but we also have a constant quest for excellence in the classroom. No matter the occasion, Aggies plan to finish first!!
