A&T Loses Game 1 of a 3-Game Series to Elon

JT Taylor hits his first homer of the season.

GREENSBORO – Elon started fast Friday in the first game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association baseball series against North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium.

That fast start propelled the Phoenix to a 10-3 win, snapping A&T's three-game winning streak. The loss dropped A&T to 8-20 overall, 2-8 in CAA play. Right-hander Brian Strange (W, 2-3) led Elon with strong pitching, improving their record to 12-17 overall and 4-9 in conference.

Elon's first three batters—Jackson Alford, Jared Hall, and Brian DuRoff—all recorded hits, quickly giving the Phoenix a 1-0 lead with DuRoff's RBI double. Gar Hindle's groundout added a run before Jose Mariano singled to score DuRoff for a 3-0 lead.

Mariano stole second, and after A&T starter and right-hander Gavin Sentell (L, 1-5) struck out Brent Smith, Gavin Bogdanchik singled to score Mariano, capping a four-run first inning. Sentell held Elon to one hit over two innings before the Phoenix struck again. Nate Sterling's RBI double in the fourth made it 5-0. Mariano's fifth-inning home run extended the lead before the Aggies scored in their half of the fifth.

Senior Luis Gomez, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored on Friday, opened the fifth with a double to left-center before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Freshman Luis Acevedo eventually brought him home with an RBI sacrifice fly to right. But Elon's three-run sixth gave the Phoenix a comfortable 9-1 lead.

During the frame, Hall recorded a two-run RBI single that led to Sentell exiting the game for RHP Benny Whiteaker. Hindle also had an RBI sac fly in the sixth. While Elon built its lead, Strange kept the Aggies off the scoreboard. Strange pitched 7.0 innings, giving up six hits, striking out six, and surrendering one run. Trailing 10-1, the Aggies did get to RHP Cade Mustard in the ninth when sophomore JT Taylor hit a two-out, two-run homer to left field. It marked Taylor's first home run of the season after he hit 11 homers last season. After the Taylor homer, Gomez singled, but the game ended with a strikeout.

Sophomore Tyler Smith went 2-for-3 for the Aggies. Bogdanchik went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Phoenix. The teams finish the series with a Saturday 1 p.m. doubleheader at The War.
